Ivy Creek Natural Area and Historic River View Farm
Historic River View Farm is the home of the Carr/Greer family, who were leaders and educators in their community. Within a few years of Emancipation, Mr. Hugh Carr established River View Farm. Here he and his family were able to create a successful farm and expand his land holdings, eventually becoming one of the largest African American landowners in Albemarle County. He and his wife, Mrs. Texie Mae Hawkins Carr raised seven children on the farm and made sure each recieved an education. Many of the children went on to become educators and community leaders. After attending college and receiving her teaching degree, Mrs. Mary Carr Greer and her husband, Mr. Conly Greer moved back to the farm to care for the land. Mrs. Greer, taught at the Albemarle Training School, one of the segregated schools in Albemarle County, and went on to become the first female principal of the school. Mrs. Greer was not only an educator but was also a community organizer, leaders, and advocate for her community. Mr. Conly Greer, was the first African American Agricultural Extension Agent in Albemarle County, he served his community in this role from 1918-1953. In this position he worked with other African American farmers to teach modern farming methods, led the then segregated 4H program, and ran the segregated fair. Mr. Greer also built the historic 1930s Sanitary barn that is located on the property. Tours of River View Farm are offered regularly. Visitors can also learn about the family and the farm through an interpretive signage, brochures, self-guided walks, and seven miles of trails that now run through what used to be the farmland.
