James Madison's Montpelier

11350 Constitution Highway
Montpelier Station, Virginia 22957

Montpelier is a memorial to the Madisons and the Enslaved Community, a museum of American history, and a center for constitutional education that engages the public with the enduring legacy of James Madison's most powerful idea: government by the people.

Dive into the history of American democracy at Montpelier, home of James and Dolley Madison - Father of the Constitution, Architect of the Bill of Rights, and America’s 1st First Lady. It was at Montpelier where Madison studied 400 years of democracies past to create the U.S. Constitution, one of the most important political documents ever written.

At Montpelier, guests can see active archaeology sites, engage with our Interpretive Staff on tours, visit the Madison family cemetery and the Montpelier Burial Ground, or enjoy a walk through the old-growth forest.

A variety of guided tours are available daily or guests can explore the Montpelier grounds with a Property Pass at their own pace.

In addition to the historic home of the Madisons, a visit to Montpelier includes the historic Annie duPont Formal Garden, galleries such as the award-winning exhibition, "The Mere Distinction of Colour", the Gilmore Cabin, the Montpelier Train Depot, and 8+ miles of hiking trails.

The Museum Shop is open during operating hours and includes an array of books, t-shirts, kid-centric gifts, and locally-made jewelry, snacks, and home goods.

With so much to do, you'll enjoy the whole day at Montpelier!
