Leander McCormick Observatory
One of the oldest observatory public programs in the country, Leander McCormick Observatory opens its doors twice a month, so visitors can experience the wonders of the Universe. The McCormick Observatory and its telescopes were used to measure the distance of nearby celestial objects from its dedication in 1885 through the early 1990s. Today, it serves as an educational tool with a rich history rooted in the foundation of the University.
Leander McCormick Observatory is open for Public Nights the FIRST and THIRD Friday nights of every month (except holidays). Visitors can view celestial objects through the historic 26” McCormick Refractor and other smaller telescopes (weather permitting), tour the Observatory, hear a presentation by an astronomer, and see astronomy exhibits. All faculty, postdocs, and graduate students participate through a rotating schedule, so visitors will hear a unique talk each visit!
The Observatory is open for Public Nights 9:00 pm-11:00 pm during daylight saving time (mid-March to early November) and 7:00 pm-9:00 pm during eastern standard time (early November to mid-March).
Admission is always free. Registration is required and fills up quickly. Registration for an upcoming month is released on the 1st of the month prior. Click here for FAQs and to register.
Please Note: Owing to crowd size, groups cannot be accommodated at McCormick Public Nights. The Leander McCormick Observatory is open to educational groups with advanced reservations on the SECOND and FOURTH Friday nights of every month. Group night reservations fill up quickly; reserve your group night several months in advance.
