Completed and first performed in 1885, Antonin Dvořák's Symphony No. 7 in D minor is arguably one of his best works. Dramatic and even somber at times, the symphony reflects the political struggles of the Czech nation at the time, as well as his personal struggle between his own patriotism and personal ambitions. Although his No. 9 is his most popular, the No. 7 is widely touted by critics and musicologists as Dvořák's greatest symphony.

Charlottesville's own Christina Flemming will be performing Joseph Canteloube's "Songs of the Auvergne." These are a collection of folk songs from the Auvergne region of France. Canteloube arranged them for voice and accompaniment between 1923 and 1930.

The two Lachian Dances that the ASO will be playing by Czech composer Leoš Janáček reflect folk songs of the Moroccan Wallachia (later Lachian) region of what is now the Czech Republic.
