Samuel Barber, Adagio for Strings: Taken from Barber's String Quartet and arranged by him for orchestra, the Adagio for Strings is moving in its stark simplicity, often heard as an expression of grief in American moments of national tragedy. But it has also found its way into movies and soundtracks, becoming one of classical music's most recognizable works.
A.D. Carson, & metaphors: UVA Associate Professor of Hip-Hop & the Global South A.D. Carson raps with Charlottesville Symphony in the world premiere performance of a thought-provoking work commissioned from him for the orchestra's 50th anniversary.
Wolfgang Amadè Mozart, Requiem: Mozart's final, unfinished composition turned out to be his own musical memorial. Its deeply personal, dramatic power contrasts darkness and light through the redeeming language of the requiem mass. Charlottesville Symphony Music Director Benjamin Rous has invited four soloists known internationally for their compelling Mozart interpretations to join the orchestra and the UVA University Singers in this highlight of the 50th Anniversary Season.
