Despite legacies of slavery becoming an important subject of humanistic inquiry and public discourse, Spain's Laws of Historical and Democratic Memory remain silent on the colonial question. Dr. Tsuchiya's talk on the "Politics of Public Memory in Modern Catalonia: Debates around Monuments to Slave Traders and Colonizers" considers how collective memory about slavery is brought into public consciousness and explores the strategies activists use to reframe public debate. Followed by a reception. Made possible through a generous gift from the Gerszten Family to the Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese at the University of Virginia.
