Robert Jospé Trio at The Stage

The Robert Jospé Trio will will put on the fourth night of this year's Jazz Marathon concerts. This is a free event, open to all. You can also listen on the radio (91.1 FM) or on-line, and even video stream it at WTJU's Facebook page or YouTube channel. But concerts always sound better with you as part of the studio audience. WTJU is located at 2244 Ivy Rd in Charlottesville, right next door to Vivace. There is plenty of parking, both in our lot as well as the Sentara lot next door.

Robert Jospé is a jazz drummer, percussionist, composer, educator and band leader of Robert Jospé Trio, Express and the Inner Rhythm band. He is nationally known for his eight CDs as leader, receiving two four-star reviews in Downbeat Magazine, reaching #4 twice on JazzWeek national radio chart and being featured in Jazztimes Magazine and Modern Drummer. His latest album "Just Lookin'" was released in 2019. Robert has been a touring artist and educator with the Virginia Commission for The Arts for 30 years. Robert joined the University of Virginia's music department's faculty in 1989. Jospé teaches jazz drumming and a hand drumming / rhythmic fluency course "Learn to Groove". He is a member of UVA's faculty jazz ensemble, The Free Bridge Quintet.

Throughout his career Jospé has played and recorded with many bands and in many musical styles including Tim Reynolds and TR3, (rock/reggae/fusion), John D'earth Quartet, pianists Hod O'Brien and Cyrus Chestnut, guitarist Stanley Jordan, vocalist Bobby McFerrin and John McCutcheon (folk rock), Robert has been featured on the PBS TV series Charlottesville Inside Out and in 2012 was awarded artist/educator of the year by the Charlottesville Jazz Society.

Justin Nelson-piano was born in Gainesville, Florida. He began studying the saxophone at age 12 and ever since has had an intense passion for music. He received his A.A. from Florida State University, with an emphasis in jazz saxophone performance and philosophy. Upon deciding to switch instruments to the piano, he then transferred to the University of Florida (UF) to pursue a degree in English. During this time Justin began studying the piano seriously and realized it was what he wanted to do with his life. Upon his graduation from UF, Justin then attended and graduated from a groundbreaking course in piano music-making and technique, entitled "Injury-Preventive Keyboard Technique," created by world-renowned musician Barbara Lister-Sink. The three-year program helped him to free himself from physical limitations at the piano in order to allow his artistic ideas to flow freely. He is a certified teacher of the Lister-Sink Method and a great proponent of its principles. Now, having performed and taught all over North Carolina for the past 10 years, Justin has moved to Charlottesville to further pursue his career in music, complete his training to be an AMSAT Certified Alexander Technique Teacher, and is excited for the opportunities and friendships this new area of the U.S. will bring.
